When a deadline falls on a weekend or bank holiday, hand your letter in on the last working day before it, so it's received in time.
Why these dates
They come from the Burgundy Book, the national conditions for teachers in maintained schools. Teachers give two months' notice (three in the summer term); headteachers give three months (four in the summer term). Notice runs to the end of a term, so you're paid through the holiday.
Do they apply to me?
- Maintained schools: yes.
- Academies and free schools: most use the same dates, but check your contract.
- Independent schools: often different; check your contract.
- Support staff: usually not. Your notice period is in your contract (often one month) and isn't tied to term dates.
Can I leave at another time?
Only if your school agrees to release you early. Ask your headteacher; many will agree if cover can be arranged.
When to start looking
Many schools advertise for September from January to May, so most teachers who move in September resign by 31 May after securing a new post. Set up job alerts well before your deadline.
