The Opportunity Are you a philosopher, a theologian, and a social commentator rolled into one? Do you have the ability to facilitate respectful, deep-seated dialogue on the most profound questions of human existence? We are seeking an intellectually rigorous and empathetic Religious Education (RE) Teacher to join a collaborative Humanities department in Blackburn . In a town characterised by its diverse multi-faith community and rich industrial history, this school provides a vibrant backdrop for a specialist who can navigate the complexities of belief, ethics, and philosophy in the 21st century. We are looking for an educator who can foster a classroom culture of "religious literacy," preparing students to engage thoughtfully with a globalised world. Core Responsibilities • Pedagogical Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality, objective, and enquiry-based lessons across KS3 & KS4 , with potential opportunities to teach A-Level Philosophy and Ethics . • Theological Enquiry: Guiding students through the core tenets, practices, and diverse expressions of the world’s major religions, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. • Ethical Debate: Leading sophisticated discussions on contemporary moral issues, from medical ethics and animal rights to social justice and the relationship between religion and science. • Curriculum Innovation: Developing resources that reflect the unique local context of Blackburn while maintaining a broad, balanced, and inclusive global perspective. • Exam Mastery: Guiding GCSE cohorts through the AQA or Edexcel (Specification B) requirements, focusing on high-level evaluation, scriptural analysis, and the command of technical vocabulary. • SMSC Leadership: Playing a pivotal role in the school’s Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development, coordinating "Interfaith Week" events and managing visits to local places of worship. Why This School? • Blackburn’s Multi-Faith Landscape: Work in a town where RE is a high-profile subject, offering immediate access to a wealth of community leaders and diverse cultural resources. • Collaborative Humanities Faculty: Join a team that values "interdisciplinary" learning, working closely with History and Geography colleagues to provide a holistic understanding of the human experience. • Dialogue-Driven Environment: Benefit from a school culture that prioritises oracy and respectful debate, providing the perfect platform for exploring sensitive and complex topics. • Professional Growth: Access to specialist CPD through the NATRE (National Association of Teachers of RE), external examiner training, and pathways toward Head of RE or Pastoral Leadership roles. Candidate Profile • Qualification: QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a strong honours degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Philosophy, or a closely related discipline. • Subject Knowledge: A deep understanding of world religions and the ability to teach complex philosophical concepts (e.g., Utilitarianism, Virtue Ethics) to students of all abilities. • Pedagogy: A proven track record of facilitating strong student progress and a commitment to creating an inclusive, safe space for all viewpoints. • Character: A resilient, open-minded, and articulate educator who can build strong relationships across the community and inspire a genuine interest in the "big questions."
