Career decisions matter. This page explains how SchoolJobs.uk researches, writes, reviews and updates every article in our Career Advice section.

Who writes our advice

Our articles are written by qualified teachers, headteachers, SENCOs, school business managers, HR specialists and experienced school recruiters. Every author has a public profile listing their qualifications and areas of expertise.

How articles are researched

Primary sources: the DfE, STPCD, KCSIE, Teachers' Pay & Conditions Document, NJC pay circulars, Ofsted framework, unions and awarding bodies.
Practitioner input: interviews with heads, deputies, SENCOs, TAs, cover supervisors and business managers currently working in UK schools.
Live data: pay data is cross-checked against live SchoolJobs.uk vacancies and published pay scales.

Editorial review

Every article passes through an editor and, where the topic requires it, a subject-matter reviewer — a qualified teacher for pedagogy, a SENCO for SEND content, an HR practitioner for employment law and safer recruitment, and a school business manager for pay and pensions. Safeguarding, KCSIE and legal content receive additional review.

How often we update articles

Pay-scale and statutory content: reviewed each September and after every STPCD update.
Safeguarding and KCSIE content: reviewed each academic year.
All other content: reviewed on at least a 12-month cycle, plus whenever guidance materially changes.

Every article shows the date it was last reviewed. We only change that date when we have genuinely reviewed the content.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email corrections@schooljobs.uk. We correct the article, log what changed, and update the "last reviewed" date.

Editorial independence

Career Advice is editorial. Job listings are commercial. Advice is never influenced by which schools or agencies advertise with SchoolJobs.uk, and articles never promote a specific employer over another.

How we calculate salary figures

UK-wide averages come from the current STPCD and NJC pay scales, cross-checked against the median advertised salary of comparable jobs on SchoolJobs.uk in the last 12 months. Location figures apply Inner/Outer London and Fringe weighting where relevant, plus regional cost-of-living adjustments for non-London regions.
