What an M1 teacher takes home

A full-time teacher on M1 outside London, paying into the Teachers' Pension and with no student loan, takes home about £26,030 a year, or £2,169 a month. Use the teacher pay calculator for your own point, area, allowances and hours.

Main and upper pay ranges

  • Main pay range (M1–M6): where qualified teachers start, including early career teachers.
  • Upper pay range (U1–U3): teachers apply to move onto it, usually after several years on M6. Schools set the criteria in their pay policy.
  • Most schools move teachers up one point each September, but each school's pay policy decides how.

Do academies use this scale?

Maintained schools must follow the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD). Academies and free schools can set their own pay, but most follow the national scale or match it closely. Check the advert or ask the school.

Part-time teachers

Part-time teachers are paid the same point, pro rata. A teacher on M3 working 3 days a week (0.6) earns £38,400 × 0.6 = £23,040 a year.
