Questions

When do I apply for a school place in England?

Secondary applications close on 31 October and primary (reception) on 15 January, for a September start. You apply to the council where you live, even for schools in another council area.

When are school places offered?

Secondary offers are made on 1 March and primary offers on 16 April, or the next working day if that falls at a weekend or bank holiday.

Is it the same in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

No. Scottish children get a place at their catchment school and can make a placing request; Welsh councils set their own timetables; Northern Ireland follows the Department of Education's common timetable through the Education Authority. Each council page explains its own process.
