About English academy trusts

Multi-academy trusts (MATs)

MATs run two or more academies under a single legal charity, sharing central services, CPD and career pathways. Working for a MAT often means access to trust-wide progression across primary, secondary and SEND settings.

Single-academy trusts (SATs)

SATs run one academy — typically a former converter or free school. Smaller than MATs but with the same freedoms from local authority control.

Academies are funded directly by central government and run by an academy trust; maintained schools are funded and overseen by the local authority. Pay scales, term dates and admissions can differ.

＋Do academy trusts pay teachers on the STPCD?

Academy trusts are not legally required to follow the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document, but most mirror STPCD ranges. Individual trust profiles link to their pay policies where published.
