About the role

Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) Apply by: Midnight 18th October 2026 Start Date: January 2027

Salary: Main scale/UPS plus TLR 2 (Inner London)

Location: Hackney New Primary School, 2 Downham Road, London, Greater London, N1 5FR Contract type: Full time, Permanent Hours: Full time (32.5 hours per week across the year, supported through time off in lieu due to extended school day) This role is based at Hackney New Primary School, part of Compass Eko Trust. We are looking for an experienced and committed teacher to become our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). Working under the direction of the Headteacher, you will lead the strategic development and day-to-day operation of SEN policy and provision, provide professional guidance to colleagues and work closely with pupils, families and external agencies. The opportunity to combine whole-school SENCO leadership with direct teaching and learning within one of the school’s provisions

Close partnership working with staff, parents and carers, the local authority and a wide range of external professionals

A key role in developing staff practice through professional guidance, training, INSET and ongoing professional development conversations

A strong focus on using assessment, intervention evaluation, provision planning and resources effectively to improve outcomes for pupils with SEN or a disability

In this role, you will: Lead the strategic development, implementation, monitoring and review of SEN policy and provision across the school

Oversee the day-to-day operation of the SEN policy, including maintaining an accurate SEND register and provision map and co-ordinating provision to meet individual pupils’ needs

Provide guidance to colleagues on the graduated approach, high-quality inclusive teaching and effective interventions, using assessment data to inform provision planning

Work closely with parents and carers, early years providers, other schools, educational psychologists, health and social care professionals, the local authority and other external agencies

Contribute to school development and statutory compliance, lead staff development and INSET, and lead and manage teaching assistants working with pupils with SEN or a disability

Who we are looking for:

We are seeking an experienced teacher with the qualifications, knowledge and leadership skills to secure high-quality provision and strong outcomes for pupils with SEN or a disability.

This role is ideal for a teacher who:

Has Qualified Teacher Status, a degree and relevant teaching qualification, and holds the NPQ SENCO or is willing to complete it within 3 years of appointment

Has a minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience and strong experience of working closely with children with SEND

Has experience of working at a whole-school level, including self-evaluation and development planning, and of conducting training or leading INSET

Has sound knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and a strong understanding of high-quality inclusive teaching and effective intervention strategies

Can plan and evaluate interventions, analyse data to inform provision, communicate effectively and build strong working relationships, including through influence and negotiation

Is committed to securing the best outcomes for pupils, equal opportunities, ongoing professional learning, confidentiality, safeguarding and equality, and can prioritise effectively under pressure

The SENCO will fulfil the responsibilities of a teacher as set out in the STPCD. This may include leading teaching and learning within one of the school’s provisions for 2.5 days per week.
